Dogs Breakfast 13 guest speaker: Rueben Mayes

The Huskies Football Foundation today announced Rueben Mayes will be the guest speaker. The Breakfast will be held on Thursday May 2 and tickets can be purchased by downloading this form or by ordering online.
Mayes first gained notoriety as a running back at North Battleford Comprehensive High School in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. In 1980 Mayes led the NBCHS Vikings to an undefeated season and the SHSAA 3A Provincial Football championship.
In 1981 he set a provincial record in the 100 metre race at the SHSAA provincial track and field championship that still stands.
Mayes played for the Washington State University Cougars, where he became All-American and finished tenth in the Heisman Trophy race. Mayes set single-season and career-rushing records (1,632; 3,519 yards) with the Cougars, and established an NCAA record for most rushing yards in one game (357 vs. Oregon in 1984). That record remains the Pacific-10 Conference record.
He was drafted in the third round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He proceeded to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award that year. Although his NFL career was hampered by injuries, he was named to the Pro Bowl twice. Mayes played five seasons with the Saints before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks for the final two years of his career.
On May 1, 2008, Rueben was elected to the US College Football Hall of Fame.
“It will be great to have Rueben speak at the 13th Dogs’ Breakfast,” said Huskies Head Coach Brian Towriss. “He had a great career in high school in Saskatchewan and played at the highest level of football in the NFL. He is an inspiration to many kids in the province.”

Garcia Quarterbacks Breakfast
The Huskies Football Foundation announced today that CFL All Star and NFL Pro Bowl Quarterback Jeff Garcia will be the keynote speaker at the twelfth edition of the Dogs Breakfast.
Jeff Garcia is an American football quarterback for the Houston Texans. A four-time CFL All-Star and four-time NFL Pro Bowl selection, Garcia began his professional football career with the Calgary Stampeders as an un-drafted free agent in 1994. Garcia took over as starter in 1995 when Doug Flutie was sidelined midway through the season. In his second start filling in for Flutie, Garcia set a team record with 546 passing yards and six touchdown passes in the Labour Day game against Edmonton. In 1997, Garcia won the Jeff Nicklin Trophy, an award to the Most Outstanding Player in the CFL Western Division. Garcia led the Stampeders to the Western Final in 1996 and to the Western Semi-Final in 1997. In 1998, he led the Stampeders to a Grey Cup Victory over the Hamilton Tiger Cats. In 1999, Garcia debuted with the San Francisco 49ers. Since 2003, he has also played for the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Oakland Raiders. In 2010, Garcia played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.
Garcia is the sixth legendary quarterback to speak at the Dogs Breakfast since the football scholarship fundraiser began twelve years ago. He joins quarterbacks Ron Lancaster, Russ Jackson, Warren Moon, Matt Dunigan, and Damon Allen among others on the list of outstanding key note speakers featured at past Breakfasts.
Moira Sheridan, Chair of the 12th Annual Dogs Breakfast, commented: “As a result of the hard work of a diverse group of individuals committed to the ongoing success of the Huskies Football program, I am proud to be the Chairperson of one of Canada’s premier University Football fundraising events. It is always an exciting morning for football fans to hear gridiron legends speak and see the new recruits. This year’s edition of the Breakfast will be no exception.”
The Dogs Breakfast takes place at Prairieland Park on Thursday May 3rd. As in the past, a huge crowd is expected and guests are reminded to arrive early to catch the “Pre-Game Interviews” and be seated prior to the Official Program at 7:30 AM. Doors will open at 6:45 AM. $100 tickets and $800 tables may be purchased online at www.huskiesfootballfoundation.com. For more information contact Huskie Athletics at 966-1002.
Dogs’ Breakfast XI speaker announced: Damon Allen
Damon Allen is a former professional quarterback in the Canadian Football League, most recently with the Toronto Argonauts. Allen leads the alltime pro football passing chart with 72,381 passing yards; he surpassed Warren Moon’s total of 70,553 yards (in both the CFL and NFL combined) on September 4, 2006 at the annual Labour Day Classic. The 2007 season marked Allen’s twenty-third season in the CFL. He retired on May 28, 2008 at age 44.
Allen is the younger brother of NFL Hall of Famer Marcus Allen. Allen has been mentioned as one of the greatest CFL quarterbacks of all time; he has 4,220 more passing yards than second-place Anthony Calvillo as of the end of the 2010 CFL season. In addition, he stands fifteenth on the all time professional rushing list (third on the all time CFL list behind Mike Pringle and George Reed) and retired only 323 yards behind his brother Marcus.
With a quiet confidence, sense of fun and storytelling, Allen brings to audiences his unique perspective on leadership and teamwork. He might even throw one of his infamous passes into the crowd, so be ready!
