Garcia Quarterbacks Breakfast

February 1, 2012 Leave a comment

The Huskies Football Foundation announced today that CFL All Star and NFL Pro Bowl Quarterback Jeff Garcia will be the keynote speaker at the twelfth edition of the Dogs Breakfast.

Jeff Garcia is an American football quarterback for the Houston Texans. A four-time CFL All-Star and four-time NFL Pro Bowl selection, Garcia began his professional football career with the Calgary Stampeders as an un-drafted free agent in 1994. Garcia took over as starter in 1995 when Doug Flutie was sidelined midway through the season. In his second start filling in for Flutie, Garcia set a team record with 546 passing yards and six touchdown passes in the Labour Day game against Edmonton. In 1997, Garcia won the Jeff Nicklin Trophy, an award to the Most Outstanding Player in the CFL Western Division. Garcia led the Stampeders to the Western Final in 1996 and to the Western Semi-Final in 1997. In 1998, he led the Stampeders to a Grey Cup Victory over the Hamilton Tiger Cats. In 1999, Garcia debuted with the San Francisco 49ers. Since 2003, he has also played for the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Oakland Raiders. In 2010, Garcia played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.

Garcia is the sixth legendary quarterback to speak at the Dogs Breakfast since the football scholarship fundraiser began twelve years ago. He joins quarterbacks Ron Lancaster, Russ Jackson, Warren Moon, Matt Dunigan, and Damon Allen among others on the list of outstanding key note speakers featured at past Breakfasts.

Moira Sheridan, Chair of the 12th Annual Dogs Breakfast, commented: “As a result of the hard work of a diverse group of individuals committed to the ongoing success of the Huskies Football program, I am proud to be the Chairperson of one of Canada’s premier University Football fundraising events.  It is always an exciting morning for football fans to hear gridiron legends speak and see the new recruits.  This year’s edition of the Breakfast will be no exception.”

The Dogs Breakfast takes place at Prairieland Park on Thursday May 3rd. As in the past, a huge crowd is expected and guests are reminded to arrive early to catch the “Pre-Game Interviews” and be seated prior to the Official Program at 7:30 AM. Doors will open at 6:45 AM. $100 tickets and $800 tables may be purchased online at www.huskiesfootballfoundation.com. For more information contact Huskie Athletics at 966-1002.

Dogs’ Breakfast XI speaker announced: Damon Allen

February 11, 2011 Leave a comment

Damon Allen is a former professional quarterback in the Canadian Football League, most recently with the Toronto Argonauts. Allen leads the alltime pro football passing chart with 72,381 passing yards; he surpassed Warren Moon’s total of 70,553 yards (in both the CFL and NFL combined) on September 4, 2006 at the annual Labour Day Classic. The 2007 season marked Allen’s twenty-third season in the CFL. He retired on May 28, 2008 at age 44.

Allen is the younger brother of NFL Hall of Famer Marcus Allen. Allen has been mentioned as one of the greatest CFL quarterbacks of all time; he has 4,220 more passing yards than second-place Anthony Calvillo as of the end of the 2010 CFL season. In addition, he stands fifteenth on the all time professional rushing list (third on the all time CFL list behind Mike Pringle and George Reed) and retired only 323 yards behind his brother Marcus.

With a quiet confidence, sense of fun and storytelling, Allen brings to audiences his unique perspective on leadership and teamwork. He might even throw one of his infamous passes into the crowd, so be ready!

The Dogs Breakfast takes place on Thursday April 29 with doors opening at 6:45 and the pre-breakfast program starting at 7:00. The official program starts at 7:30 at Prairieland Park. The guest speaker is Warren Moon

The Huskies Football Foundation has decided to move the breakfast into the bigger Hall E at Prairieland Park due to the number of tickets sold. Last year the event was held in Hall B because of a trade show.

Organizers have planned a program where most of the action takes place in the center of the hall so that all seats will be good. There will be even more big screens and better lighting to make sure that everyone can see.

The program will feature a few surprises along with the introduction of the new recruits and the announcement of the Huskies Football Ambassador Award.

There are still tickets available and you can get them online at the Huskies Football Foundation website.

We congratulate head coach Brian Towriss for his 26 outstanding years as Huskies Head Coach and we want to assist him as he continues the winning tradition of Huskie Football.”

The event is one of the top football fundraisers in Canada that annually generates over $100,000 for football scholarships to the U of S. In total, over $700,000 has been raised since 2001. The Dogs’ Breakfast is one of Canada’s largest sports breakfasts with about 2,000 people in attendance.

Huskies Head Coach Brian Towriss added, “The Dogs’ Breakfast is held on the weekend of the Huskie Football Spring Camp and many of the speakers stay in Saskatoon for a few extra days and help coach during the camp.
