The Huskies Football Foundation today announced Rueben Mayes will be the guest speaker. The Breakfast will be held on Thursday May 2 and tickets can be purchased by downloading this form or by ordering online.

Mayes first gained notoriety as a running back at North Battleford Comprehensive High School in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. In 1980 Mayes led the NBCHS Vikings to an undefeated season and the SHSAA 3A Provincial Football championship.

In 1981 he set a provincial record in the 100 metre race at the SHSAA provincial track and field championship that still stands.

Mayes played for the Washington State University Cougars, where he became All-American and finished tenth in the Heisman Trophy race. Mayes set single-season and career-rushing records (1,632; 3,519 yards) with the Cougars, and established an NCAA record for most rushing yards in one game (357 vs. Oregon in 1984). That record remains the Pacific-10 Conference record.
He was drafted in the third round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He proceeded to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award that year. Although his NFL career was hampered by injuries, he was named to the Pro Bowl twice. Mayes played five seasons with the Saints before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks for the final two years of his career.

On May 1, 2008, Rueben was elected to the US College Football Hall of Fame.

“It will be great to have Rueben speak at the 13th Dogs’ Breakfast,” said Huskies Head Coach Brian Towriss. “He had a great career in high school in Saskatchewan and played at the highest level of football in the NFL. He is an inspiration to many kids in the province.”

The Huskies Football Foundation announced today that CFL All Star and NFL Pro Bowl Quarterback Jeff Garcia will be the keynote speaker at the twelfth edition of the Dogs Breakfast.

Jeff Garcia is an American football quarterback for the Houston Texans. A four-time CFL All-Star and four-time NFL Pro Bowl selection, Garcia began his professional football career with the Calgary Stampeders as an un-drafted free agent in 1994. Garcia took over as starter in 1995 when Doug Flutie was sidelined midway through the season. In his second start filling in for Flutie, Garcia set a team record with 546 passing yards and six touchdown passes in the Labour Day game against Edmonton. In 1997, Garcia won the Jeff Nicklin Trophy, an award to the Most Outstanding Player in the CFL Western Division. Garcia led the Stampeders to the Western Final in 1996 and to the Western Semi-Final in 1997. In 1998, he led the Stampeders to a Grey Cup Victory over the Hamilton Tiger Cats. In 1999, Garcia debuted with the San Francisco 49ers. Since 2003, he has also played for the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Oakland Raiders. In 2010, Garcia played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.

Garcia is the sixth legendary quarterback to speak at the Dogs Breakfast since the football scholarship fundraiser began twelve years ago. He joins quarterbacks Ron Lancaster, Russ Jackson, Warren Moon, Matt Dunigan, and Damon Allen among others on the list of outstanding key note speakers featured at past Breakfasts.

Moira Sheridan, Chair of the 12th Annual Dogs Breakfast, commented: “As a result of the hard work of a diverse group of individuals committed to the ongoing success of the Huskies Football program, I am proud to be the Chairperson of one of Canada’s premier University Football fundraising events. It is always an exciting morning for football fans to hear gridiron legends speak and see the new recruits. This year’s edition of the Breakfast will be no exception.”

The Dogs Breakfast takes place at Prairieland Park on Thursday May 3rd. As in the past, a huge crowd is expected and guests are reminded to arrive early to catch the “Pre-Game Interviews” and be seated prior to the Official Program at 7:30 AM. Doors will open at 6:45 AM. $100 tickets and $800 tables may be purchased online at www.huskiesfootballfoundation.com. For more information contact Huskie Athletics at 966-1002.

The 11th Annual Dog’s Breakfast featuring guest speaker, and CFL hall-of-famer, Damon Allen is right around the corner. I caught up with this year’s Chair, Mike Gartner, for a quick update on ticket sales for the event on April 28th.

“Ticket sales are going strong and we’ve once again had great commitment by the Saskatchewan community to make this year a success,” Gartner said regarding the final push for ticket sales. “With Easter and spring break coming up, we’re really pushing to have all those who have confirmed seats and tables purchase their tickets.”

Gartner mentioned that the upcoming holidays are pushing the Foundation’s preparation back a week early. He urged me to mention that anyone interested in buying a table, or individual tickets, please do so by this Friday, April 15, to help out the team that is working hard to finalize preparation.

Agenda
The Breakfast agenda is set and guests have been confirmed. There will be a star-studded cast on hand at Prairieland Park, including many former Huskies now playing in the CFL. And of course, Damon Allen will be available after the breakfast to sign autographs for the kids and those with the kid still inside of them. More information regarding the breakfast agenda, VIP guests and fan opportunities will follow in Thursday’s post.

With the lead up to the 11th Dog’s Breakfast building, I managed to sit down with Head Coach Brian Towriss for a quick chat about scholarships and the highly competitive nature of recruiting.

“From 10 years ago until now, we were dealing with about $45,000 made up mostly of alumni and family donations,” said Towriss of the changing atmosphere in CIS recruiting. “Now, most schools have a full scholarship program of at least 31 full
scholarships and we are able to pay up to our full cap. 51 guys on the team received scholarships in some form last year.”

As a player I experience first hand the important role that scholarships play in allowing us to be student athletes. Due to the number of hours of training in the off-season and practice during the year, it is a struggle financially because of the limited time players have to work and earn money. The scholarships help to ease the financial burden of being a student athlete and mean more to families then to the players themselves.

“If it weren’t for the Dog’s Breakfast, we would be about $100,000 short in our scholarship commitments per year and we would not be able to keep up in terms of the talent,” Coach Towriss said of translating scholarships to success on the field.

Being able to recruit three or four top prospects in the CanWest that can plug in and play right away is huge for maintaining the competitive level of the our program. With that said, the guys who come to the Huskies to develop are able to because the scholarship money helps to take care of the financial aspect of year round training.

Damon Allen is a former professional quarterback in the Canadian Football League, most recently with the Toronto Argonauts. Allen leads the alltime pro football passing chart with 72,381 passing yards; he surpassed Warren Moon’s total of 70,553 yards (in both the CFL and NFL combined) on September 4, 2006 at the annual Labour Day Classic. The 2007 season marked Allen’s twenty-third season in the CFL. He retired on May 28, 2008 at age 44.

Allen is the younger brother of NFL Hall of Famer Marcus Allen. Allen has been mentioned as one of the greatest CFL quarterbacks of all time; he has 4,220 more passing yards than second-place Anthony Calvillo as of the end of the 2010 CFL season. In addition, he stands fifteenth on the all time professional rushing list (third on the all time CFL list behind Mike Pringle and George Reed) and retired only 323 yards behind his brother Marcus.

With a quiet confidence, sense of fun and storytelling, Allen brings to audiences his unique perspective on leadership and teamwork. He might even throw one of his infamous passes into the crowd, so be ready!

Dogs’s Breakfast XI will be held on Thursday April 28 at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon. The formal event starts at 7:30am, with the pre-breakfast program beginning at 7:00am.

The Huskies Football Foundation will be announcing the guest speaker in the coming weeks. In the meantime, many people have asked about purchasing tickets, so we have included a form that you can download and mail or fax in. Online ticket sales will start in a few weeks.

“The scholarship funds raised at the Dogs’ Breakfast are the lifeline of our football program,” said Huskies Head Coach Brian Towriss. “Without the amazing support of the community, we would not be a competitive football team. We thank you for your support in the past and hope to see you at Dogs’ Breakfast XI.”

All of the proceeds from the breakfast go to the scholarships for Huskie Football.
